Florida Conservation Voters Education Fund was proud to bring the new, powerful documentary, RIGGED: The Voter Suppression Playbook to Tallahassee. The film, narrated by Jeffrey Wright, highlights voter suppression in America, and specifically highlights the part that partisan politics plays in the voting process and the strategy used to oppress voters across the country.
Voter ID laws, gerrymandering, and voter intimidation are just a few of the “plays” described in detail in the documentary.
After the film, we had a robust discussion about how voter suppression shows up in Florida. Many in the audience had seen some of the strategies play out here in our state. Based on the enthusiasm and passion of the audience, we’ve decided this screening will serve as our premier and we’re very excited to host other screenings around the state.
Some people wondered why FCV was involved in the Amendment 4 campaign to restore voting rights to more than 1.5 million Floridians, and why we would be sharing this film with our members because it doesn’t have to do with the environment. We would argue that voting rights have everything to do with our mission because quite frankly, we will never win on our issues if we don’t have people voting. And many of the communities that are targeted for voter suppression, are the same communities that are suffering the most from negative environmental impacts.
Florida Conservation Voters Education Fund is committed to looking at our work for Florida’s environment through a social justice lens. When we protect Florida’s communities, we protect our environment.
