RIGGED: The Voter Suppression Playbook
May 3, 2019

The Village of Pinecrest Underwater HOA held its monthly meeting at the Books & Books at Suniland Shops this past Wednesday, May 1st. The focus this month was on water issues, which have continuously been identified as a top priority for the community. Our guest speaker this month was Dr. James Englehardt, P.E., professor of environmental engineering and Director of the Water Quality Engineering Laboratory at the University of Miami. Dr. Englehardt spoke about the Autonomous Net Zero Water Project and the importance of moving towards implementation of net-zero buildings. Net Zero buildings create a water neutral space, where the amount of alternative water used and water returned to the original water source is equal to the building’s total water consumption. Some key takeaways from the discussion are:

  • Rainwater harvesting, the collection of run-off for later use, is a low-cost way to reuse water;
  • Communities should work towards net-zero systems to create more sustainable systems; and
  • There must be a combined county, state, and citizen effort to implement net zero water on a larger scale.

With the information from our guest speaker in hand, Underwater HOA members formed the Water Committee, which will focus on addressing county and village water issues. If you are interested in learning more about this committee, Underwater HOA, or how to start your own group, contact Olivia Nedd at Olivia@fcvoters.org.

Meetings for the Village of Pinecrest Underwater HOA have been set for the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m., at the Books & Books at Suniland Shops, 11297 S. Dixie Hwy. For more information or to learn how you can start an Underwater HOA in your community click here.

The Underwater HOA began in 2018 as a participatory public art project by acclaimed environmental artist, Xavier Cortada. The goal of the project is to create awareness about rising sea levels and engage citizens throughout Florida to take action towards solving the most urgent crisis of our time: climate change.
